Gadget of the Week – Trakdot

Published on May 13, 2015

Lost luggage may have just become a thing of the past, thanks to Trakdot. This smart little device tracks your luggage while traveling, syncing up with your phone to alert you of its location on the ground and giving you the peace of mind you need.

Trakdot is fueled with micro-electronics and ground-based cellular technologies that track and report location. It is powered by 2 AA sized batteries (using Duracell alkaline batteries recommended by the company).

The perk of this device is that it recognizes when it is in an airplane cargo hold, and shuts off its transmit-and receive capability, going on "airplane mode" for the duration of the flight to save battery. It safely reconnects to a local cellular network once on the ground again and alerts you of its location upon arrival.

Design-wise, Trakdot is relatively simple and lightweight. It has a singly button and indicator light, which serves as the on/off switch. The device sells for $49.99, along with unlimited tracking for the first year, and $19.99 per year afterwards.

This device could easily be a lifesaver for those worried about losing luggage while traveling.
